Teens Transform 100 Pounds of Ghost Net into Environmental Solutions
The Sea Lab Project capstone challenged 25+ teens from local Title I high schools to tackle a pressing environmental problem: ghost nets littering our oceans. Over 17 weeks in our design incubator, students transformed 100 pounds of recovered ghost net from the Deerfield Beach coast into a stunning sea turtle sculpture, turning pollution into art and learning into action.
The project culminated in a World Oceans Day celebration that engaged the community:
- 200 community members attended the event.
- 50 families participated in hands-on art-making and environmental activities.
- 25 volunteers supported the event and program activities.

Environmental Impact & Learning Outcomes
-
100 pounds of ghost net removed from the local coast and creatively repurposed.
-
250+ hours of student hands-on learning and creative work completed.
-
50 hours of field work conducted across 8 field study trips, including an unforgettable snorkel trip with Marine Lab.

Through this project, students not only learned about ocean science and environmental stewardship—they experienced the power of collaboration, creativity, and action. By turning discarded materials into meaningful art, they demonstrated how even small hands and big ideas can make a lasting impact on our oceans and communities.
